Common Causes of No Hot Water

⚠️

Diverted valve stuck or failed

Combi and system boilers use a diverted valve to switch between heating and hot water. If it's stuck in heating mode, you'll have radiators working but no hot water. If it's failed electrically, it might not move at all. We'll test it and replace it if needed. Common fault in boilers over 5 years old.

⚠️

Immersion heater element failed

If you've got a hot water cylinder with an immersion heater (common in older Swindon properties around Railway Street and Military Road), the heating element can burn out. You'll have no hot water but the central heating still works. We'll test the element with a multimeter and replace it if it's dead.

⚠️

Boiler thermostat fault

The boiler's hot water thermostat tells it when to fire up to heat water. If it's failed, the boiler won't know you're drawing hot water and won't heat it. The heating will still work because that's a different circuit. We'll test the thermostat and replace it if faulty.

⚠️

PCB fault on the boiler

The PCB (printed circuit board) controls everything on a modern boiler. If the hot water circuit on the PCB has failed, you'll have heating but no hot water. PCBs are expensive (£200-£400 for the part alone), so if your boiler's old, it might be worth considering replacement instead.

⚠️

Hot water cylinder thermostat failed

If you've got a system boiler with a hot water cylinder, the cylinder has its own thermostat. If it's failed or set too low, you won't get hot water even though the boiler's working fine. We'll check the thermostat setting and replace it if it's faulty.

What to Check Before We Arrive

1

Check if the heating works

Turn the heating on and see if the radiators get hot. If they do, the boiler's working and the problem is with the hot water circuit (diverted valve, thermostat, or pump). If nothing works, it's a boiler breakdown.

2

Check the immersion heater switch

If you've got a hot water cylinder, check if there's an immersion heater switch (usually in an airing cupboard or on the wall). Turn it on and wait an hour. If the water heats up, the immersion works but your boiler doesn't. If it stays cold, the immersion element's dead.

3

Check the boiler pressure

Low boiler pressure (below 1 bar) can stop the boiler firing. Check the pressure gauge on the front. If it's low, you can top it up using the filling loop (usually under the boiler). If it drops again quickly, you've got a leak somewhere.

4

Check for error codes

Modern boilers display error codes when something's wrong. Write down the code before we arrive and we'll know what to bring. Common codes for no hot water: diverted valve fault, pump fault, or flow sensor fault.

How We Diagnose No Hot Water Faults

1

Check the heating first

We'll turn the heating on and check if the radiators warm up. If they do, we know the boiler fires and the problem is specific to the hot water side. If nothing works, it's a boiler fault affecting both.

2

Test the diverted valve

We'll open a hot tap and listen for the diverted valve clicking over. If it doesn't move, we'll check if it's stuck mechanically or if it's an electrical fault. We'll test the motor and the microswitch. If it's seized, we'll free it off or replace it.

3

Check the pump

The pump circulates hot water from the boiler to the taps. If it's seized or failed, you'll have no hot water. We'll check if it's running (you can usually feel it vibrating). If it's seized, we'll try to free it. If it's dead, we'll replace it.

4

Test the immersion heater

If you've got an immersion heater, we'll isolate the power, remove the cover, and test the element with a multimeter. If it's open circuit, it's burned out and needs replacing. We carry immersion elements on the van for most standard cylinders.
