Signs You Need a New Radiator

⚠️

Cold at the bottom, warm at the top

Sludge has settled in the bottom and blocked the water flow. Power flushing sometimes helps, but if the radiator is old and heavily corroded, replacement is more cost-effective long-term.

⚠️

Visible rust or corrosion

Rust spots on the outside mean corrosion inside is advanced. The radiator is weakening and will eventually leak or split. Replace it before it fails catastrophically and floods the room.

⚠️

Leaking from the body

Pinhole leaks in the radiator body can't be permanently repaired. You can patch them temporarily, but more leaks will appear. If the radiator is leaking from the panel, replace it.

⚠️

Takes ages to heat up

The radiator is slow to warm compared to others in the house. Internal corrosion has reduced flow. A new radiator with clean internals will heat the room far more effectively.

⚠️

Outdated or ugly

If you're renovating and the radiator is an ancient single-panel eyesore, upgrade to a modern double-panel or designer radiator. Better heat output, better looks, better efficiency.

Choosing a New Radiator

1

Measure the existing radiator

Measure width, height, and depth. The new radiator should ideally be the same size or slightly larger for better heat output. Check the distance between the valve connections (centres).

2

Calculate the heat output you need

Radiators are rated in BTUs or Watts. Use an online BTU calculator to work out what your room needs based on size, insulation, and windows. Don't just buy the same size, it might be undersized.

3

Choose single, double, or designer

Single-panel radiators are cheapest but least efficient. Double-panel (Type 22) gives much better heat output. Designer radiators (vertical, column, towel rails) look great but check the BTU rating matches.

4

Check valve connections

Valves connect to the radiator tails at the bottom. Most modern radiators have 1/2 inch BSP connections, but check yours. We can adapt if they're different, but matching saves time.

How We Replace Radiators

1

Isolate and drain the radiator

We close both radiator valves to isolate it from the system. We drain the radiator into a bucket using the bleed valve. No need to drain the whole system, just that one radiator.

2

Disconnect and remove the old radiator

We disconnect the valves from the radiator tails, lift the radiator off the wall brackets, and carry it out. We protect your floors and walls with dustsheets.

3

Fit new brackets and prepare the wall

We remove the old brackets and fit new ones for the new radiator. We check they're level and secure into solid wall. If the wall is weak, we use stronger fixings or a different position.

4

Hang and connect the new radiator

We hang the new radiator on the brackets, connect it to the existing valves (or fit new ones if needed), and tighten everything properly. We check it's level and secure.

5

Pressurise and test

We open the valves, let the radiator fill, bleed the air out, and check for leaks. We run the heating and make sure the new radiator heats evenly. We adjust the valve if needed.

Radiator Replacement Challenges

Old valves won't close

Ancient radiator valves seize open. We can't isolate just that radiator, so we have to drain the whole system. Adds time and cost. We'll fit new valves while we're at it.

New radiator different size

The new radiator doesn't line up with the existing pipework. We can extend the pipes or fit offset radiator tails to bridge the gap. We always carry adapters and pipe for this.

Wall fixings pull out

The wall is hollow plasterboard or crumbling plaster. Standard fixings won't hold a heavy radiator. We use heavy-duty fixings, toggle bolts, or batten mounts to secure it safely.

Sludge in the system

When we drain the old radiator, black water pours out. Your whole system is full of sludge. We'll fit the new radiator but strongly recommend a power flush to protect it.

Decorating behind the radiator

The wall behind the old radiator is filthy or needs decorating. We can't do decorating, but we'll give you time to paint before we hang the new one. Plan ahead.
